We are currently accepting a wide range of quality fiction including, but not limited to, historical, contemporary, young adult and adult literature. Our commitment to help and develop our authors achieve success extends to both new and existing authors.
Whilst we try to be flexible, for most manuscripts, we would ideally expect a word count of between 70,000 and 150,000 words. We do not consider submissions for shorter novellas, unless by special commission.
Like many publishers, both large and small, we look for that something special. Most publishers are inclined to go for something that is marketable, understandably, after all it is a business. We are going to invest significant time and money in your novel, and wish to get a return.
Your novel will be a great story with a good narrative. A totally immersive read, where the reader can engage with the characters and their world. There are many online resources and physical publications that provide helpful advice on how to pull the main elements of your manuscript together before submitting it. Ultimately, we shall leave this research to you as every book is different.
Think carefully before you submit your manuscript. If it’s a first draft, then it’s very unlikely to make it through the first round. Check your spelling, grammar and punctuation. A great idea - some might say a necessary idea even - is to have a professional pre-edit for your manuscript when nearing completion, ensuring that the editor provides you with constructive criticism. This means getting the edit done by someone who understands the business, not by a family friend whose English is fairly sound. They won't tell you the truth. We are associated with Novo Editing. Please note that we only accept finished manuscripts.
Finally, after your creative journey of revisions and reiterated edits, you arrive at the final presentation stage. The more polished your work is the more likely it will gain its well deserved attention. Having spent so much time on the manuscript itself, we believe it deserves a well thought out concise synopsis of your novel. Not a blurb. We want to know what happens to your characters, not be left asking questions. Your synopsis should ideally be no more than one to one-and-a-half pages, and cover the story from beginning to end.
We only publish a small number of titles each year, and as a consequence only a small percentage of submitted manuscripts make it through our evaluation stages.
Once your initial manuscript is submitted to us, you should expect to hear back from us within 12 weeks. You will however receive an email confirmation to let you know that we have received your manuscript within 24-hours. Please note that we DO NOT accept hard copies.
Once we have had a chance to review your work we will then let you know whether it has been accepted or not. If we wish to consider your work for publication, we will ask you to submit the full manuscript for consideration. We will notify you at that stage how long you should allow us to read it through. If your manuscript has not been accepted, please do not give up hope as we only have limited capacity. Due to the number of submissions received we cannot provide a critical analysis or reasons for rejection. Manuscripts which are rejected at any stage are deleted from our database immediately upon sending of the rejection e-mail notification.
We appreciate that you may be sending your manuscript to a variety of publishers and, should you be fortunate enough to be accepted by someone else while we are reading your submission, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible, so that we can move onto someone else's work.
If your work is accepted, you will be contacted by a GWL Publishing representative, who will inform you as to whether we have decided to progress with a paperback and e-book contract, or an e-book only. This varies, depending on various reasons. We will then openly discuss the next stages that are required to get your book published - editing, cover design, marketing demographics, distribution and other options. We will also discuss the details of what you can expect from us, and what we expect of you as the author. Once everyone is happy to proceed we will ask you to sign our standard author contract.
You must submit the FIRST THREE chapters of your finished manuscript together with the following items:
- Covering letter
- A short biography
- The Synopsis.

We accept documents in the following formats: Word and Apple Pages. When naming your attachments we would appreciate it if you could include your name and/or book title.
