  • About

Laura Boxford lives with her pug, Parker in the picturesque surroundings of the Wellworth Lawns retirement complex, formerly her family home. It is an arrangement that suits her well. No more blocked drains and rattling windows. The central heating always works and she can call for room service at any time.

But then, one morning after breakfast her tranquility is disturbed. She discovers the body of her old friend Hetty Winterbottom in the room next door and by the look on her face, Hetty did not die of natural causes. As Laura recalls the strange behaviour of her friend the previous evening, she is convinced of foul play and resolves to find the perpetrator.

At first her attention focuses on the sabre-wielding Brigadier who has recently moved to a small back bedroom at Wellworth Lawns. The spectre of mortality tends to sharpen the mind of the elderly to the important comforts of life, so he appears to have the perfect motive…a room with a view.

Then Laura discovers that Hetty’s last remaining heirloom – a rare paperweight – is missing and she begins to realise that in the cut-throat world of the care home, things are not always what they seem.

A thoroughly enjoyable read - Agatha Christie with humour. The characters are captivatingly eccentric and the writer has a deft comedic touch with her observations of their behaviour. The plot twists and turns throwing up numerous red herrings before the doughty Lady Boxford and the Brigadier finally crack the case.

Death proves a winner in Nicky Stratton's accomplished debut

Death proves a winner in Nicky Stratton's accomplished debut

This is an astonishingly accomplished debut novel by a very talented writer. Deftly mixing comedy and drama, always a difficult combination, Nicky Stratton has created a hugely enjoyable murder mystery with a host of colourful and sharply-drawn characters. The heroine is Laura Boxford, who lives with her adored pug at Wellworth Lawns, a retirement complex which was, once upon a time, her family home. Far from being downcast by this potentially depressing turn of events, Laura is determined to make the best of the rest of her life.
The suspicious death of her good friend Hetty Winterbottom gives Laura a focus. Having first suspected a crusty Brigadier, whose dialogue is hilariously punctuated by a series of imperial aphorisms, her beady eye then alights upon a series of other weird and wonderful characters, few of whom are exactly what they seem.
The brisk and amusing dialogue, the believable characters and the subtle twists and turns as the novel reaches a climax, make this the proverbial page-turner. There are also hints of exotic sex in Laura's past, which gives our heroine a colourful backstory.
This is a first-class debut from Nicky Stratton. I can't wait to read more about Laura Boxford, a delightful mixture of Miss Marple. Agatha Raisin and Maggie Smith's character from Downton Abbey. Highly recommended.

This is a very funny 'can't put it down' book

This is a very funny 'can't put it down' book. It's so well written with the author describing the characters in such detail that you immediately feel you have known them for many years. It's certainly a book that keeps you thinking long after you have finished reading it.
