At the outbreak of the Second World War, the seclusion of her cottage makes it the perfect place for her best friend, Elizabeth, to bring her children, away from the threats and dangers of London.
However, when Elizabeth unexpectedly abandons the children to return to London, her husband Will, an RAF fighter pilot, is furious, writing to Josie to apologise. And although the two have never met, their correspondence continues, blossoming into something more, despite Will’s marriage.
Guilt and propriety keep them apart, but when tragedy strikes, secrets come to light and it seems their love might just have a chance… except the war is not on Josie and Will’s side. Distance, misunderstandings, jealousy and disastrous accidents threaten to end their relationship before it has even begun.
