  • About

On the day Dan Valentino walks into her office, widowed Kate Goodlove is smitten and the decision to hire him as a foreman in her bakery is an easy one. The decision to become his lover and business partner is not quite so straightforward: after all, he’s a few years younger than her and she’s still feeling vulnerable after the death of her husband, two years earlier. But then, Dan is handsome, has the most gorgeous ‘velvet’ eyes and he’s happy to include Kate’s daughter, Molly, in everything they do… What more could a woman want?

Dan has travelled around Europe learning his trade and he’s good at what he does, but now he seems to want a family and he seems to want Kate, too.

Molly loved her father dearly and misses him terribly, but in Dan she doesn’t see a potential replacement father: her feelings for him are very different indeed…

What none of them appreciate, is how quickly love can be destroyed by jealousy, misunderstandings and – above all – secrets.

In this brilliant and delightful debut novel, Christine Shaw has created a cast of believable characters, as well as a setting that allows the reader to feel at home. This is a story of hopes and dreams, family ties, friendship and love.

More than just a love story, The Baker’s Daughter has a darker side with many unexpected twists and turns which kept me turning pages wanting to know more!
I loved the regular little insights into what the characters were thinking from a first person point of view, which made them all the more believable and put a whole different slant on the story.
Recommended as a thoroughly good read!

A very satisfying book. Lots of twists and turns featuring very human, flawed characters. I wanted to scream with frustration at some of them and shake my fist at others! I really didn’t know where the plot was going until very near the end. I recommend this book if you are looking for something a bit different. 5 stars, it kept me guessing….!

    A fabulous debut novel

    A fabulous debut novel

I spent an indulgent Sunday afternoon reading The Bakers Daughter. Kate’s husband Pete dies leaving her the family business Goodlove’s bakery. To carry on she needs to find a new baker. In walks Dan, young, good looking and with the baking skills she needs an they become more than just business partners. However, Kate’s 15 year old daughter Molly thinks Dan likes her and when she realises he’s sleeping with her mother, sets off a chain of events that will change all their lives.
Plenty of twists and turns, the story hooked me in and I couldn’t put it down. I liked the point of view too from the other characters at the end of each chapter.
    A fabulous read.

This story was in very readable bite size chunks so I enjoyed reading a few pages when I had a spare moment. I felt that the characters were brought to life as the plot unfolded. I was taken on a journey that I wasn’t expecting so that kept me on my toes! The dynamics of the various relationships were interesting to follow as the connections between the characters became evident. Thank you Christine Shaw.
