My Little Brother, My Little Life

Author:

Almost all her life, Linda has lived with her brother Douggie’s disability; from the childhood forever altered by her mother’s harsh abandonment, through adolescence, marriage and children of her own, Douggie and his autism have been a constant. As middle-age, divorce and new love approach, Linda continues to live with her feelings of guilt: was it her fault her mother left; did she do enough to help her father; is her brother really happy? And is there really anything she can do about any of it?

In this bittersweet novel, examines complex relationships, love, guilt and understanding, posing the question: is it possible to please everyone else, if you fail to please yourself?

A damn good story

I wasn’t sure if this book would be my cup of tea but am so glad I gave it a go. You don’t need personal experience of disability or even poverty to enjoy this story. You need to be a human being: a human being with family and hopes and dreams. Dee gets to the heart of how and why relationships work (or don’t!), and to the resilience of individuals. Her authentic settings and realistic personalities – don’t we all know a Mr Cohen?! – drag you in to Linda’s world and have you rooting for her to the end. Highly recommended.

A fantastic book

A brilliantly written book with a very moving story, covering many issues, which also has humour and historical background as well as an unexpected end. The reader immediately empathises with Linda, the main character in the book, as you read the book you can visualise all the characters in the book and how they are interacting and coping with their own problems as if you are watching a film. I was completely enthralled and couldn’t put the book down until I had come to the end.

So serious yet so entertaining

How has Dee managed to touch on such serious themes; young carers, disability, domestic abuse infertility as well as explore the theme of guilt associated with caring for an autistic family member in such an entertaining and humorous book? I really cared about Linda reading her story as she grew up from young carer of her brother to having her own children and grandchildren. I did not expect the dramatic ending. A good read which would be ideal for a book club as there is so much to discuss in style as well as themes.

An emotional roller coaster

I got really sucked into this book – I cared about the family and rode the emotional roller coaster with them. The author clearly speaks with the voice of experience of living with an autistic family member and the impact it has on family life. But it is not at all heavy going – the humour made me laugh out loud at times. I can imagine this being made a film – it has all the ingredients for a big screen success.

Highly recommended

This was a book I really enjoyed. The characters sprang to life right from the start and I wanted to find out what happened to them. This story of an East End family is poignant without being sentimental, and anyone with autism in the family will empathise with the main character, Linda, as she struggles to deal with the problems caused by her brother’s behaviour whilst trying to forge a life for herself. Highly recommended.

Brilliantly written. Very touching story.

The characters came alive immediately and you really got to know them as the story unfolded. A very good book. One that I couldn’t put down until I’d finished it.
