Carolyn Belcher

Carolyn was born and grew up in South Lincolnshire in a small village called Holbeach Hurn. Her Aunt Margaret introduced her to the power of drama and theatre when she was twelve.

In 1970, with her first husband, Barry and their three children, she moved to Knotty Ash, in Liverpool. When the last of her three children started school, she took a Bachelor of Education degree in drama, dance and education. Her first teaching post was at Page Moss Comprehensive, and as a performance arts teacher, she was invited to be on the Board of trustees for The Everyman Theatre.

It was at Knowsley Community College, in 1984,  where as Course Coordinator for performing arts she began writing seriously, developing scripts from student improvisations. Some of the pieces were performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and two were Pick of the Day in The Scotsman.

She was one of the Founder members and first artistic director of Icarus Allsorts, a performance arts company set up to help Knowsley graduates of the performing arts, to achieve an equity card.

She took early retirement when she was fifty, and moved with her second husband, Colin, to the Maine et Loire in France in order to have more time to develop her writing.

She now lives in Suffolk where, until recently, she supplemented her pension by becoming an examiner for GCE and GCSE drama practical work. She is a volunteer at Oxfam and belongs to Write Now, the Bury St Edmunds Writers’ group.

She has had several stories and poems published in magazines and anthologies, both in England and The United States, and a monologue, which was chosen to be performed at a new writing festival, in Reading.

Theatre still plays an important part in Carolyn’s life, as does dance, gardening and entertaining family and friends.
