As the war enters its final year, Retribution concludes the story of Lives Apart:
Still in captivity, Joe wonders if he’ll ever see home again, while back in England Peggy finally finds a new peace and happiness seems assured, although Olive’s drinking and jealousy are destined to bring tragic consequences.
In France, Louis knows he must forget Brigitte and help Richard, and puts duty first as the two men make a desperate and life threatening attempt to rescue Pam, whose own will to survive has brought her to the brink.
Marcel feels guilty after Lilly’s death and wonders whether he should pursue a relationship with Jeanne, who, despite being in England, still lives in fear that Rolf will find her.
As the characters finally progress to the conclusion of the war, they discover strengths and wisdom, but for some, the need for revenge and retribution overpowers everything else.
